Reading
Readers are leaders! Read to learn. Read what is interesting to you. These are books that have influenced me.
Stoicism
I can't say enough good things about Ryan Holiday and his books on the Stoics (Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Seneca). This is an operating system for your daily life. Ryan brings in stories of people through history as examples of living by the Stoic principles. The Daily Stoic is a page per day with a quote from a Stoic and Ryan's writing on the same subject. I start each day with this. The Obstacle is the Way is the first of a three-part series that also include Ego is the Enemy and Stillness is the Key. Courage is Calling is the first of a four-part series on the Stoic virtues of courage, temperance, justice and wisdom. Discipline is Destiny is his book on temperance. The second two have yet to be published as of 2022. You can buy all his books directly from his store at The Painted Porch.
Self-Development
It is so important to challenge and develop yourself. These books have been helpful to me. In the The Path Made Clear, Oprah Winfrey summarizes the lessons of many of the people she has interviewed to show the path to figuring out your life work. In The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor shares techniques on increasing your happiness. Who wouldn't want that? In Atomic Habits, James Clear shares the power of habits and a path to developing your own positive habits that will stick. I have also added some of my other favorites.
Leadership and Teamwork
Legacy by James Kerr is so good. It tells the story of the hugely successful New Zealand national rugby team and the lessons on teamwork they embody. My favorite quote from the book "Leaders create leaders by passing responsibility and empowering ownership, accountability and trust in their teams." Words to lead by. Good to Great by Jim Collins is a classic. He emphasizes the importance of the hedgehog and the flywheel. Read the book to learn more. Simon Sinek is a current thinker on teams and leadership. In The Infinite Game he discusses the importance of a company defining their Why and treating their team with trust.
